Holiday Leave


The winter holidays are fast approaching. 

Below is an outline of the procedures for all holiday breaks and general travel. NDU has authorized an extended travel period for International Fellows to return home for family or hardship reasons from 1630, 25 NOV 2020 – 0800, 04 JAN 2021. During this period you may attend classes synchronously from outside of the National Capitol Region. Normal holiday period remains the same.

You are required to obtain travel approval if any of the following conditions apply:

  1. You are travelling farther than 250 miles from NDU. 
  2. You are travelling anywhere longer than 72 hours. 
  3. You are travelling outside the continental United States (OCONUS).

If any of the above apply to you, please fill out the form at the link below so we can collect the location, dates, and contact info for your leave. You will receive an email once approved for travel.

*ONLY if missing class OR requesting to Distance Learn* Approval is required from your college dean of students, and appropriate instructors. Please CC ISMO on your request to be absent from class.

Additional OCONUS Travel Info

If you are travelling OCONUS, you must also have leave authorization from your home military unit, defense attaché, or embassy.  Authorization may be given via a simple email or memo from that is sent to An ITO amendment will be generated after home country leave approval is received.

You are required to comply with the local travel and public health guidance of your destination.

Upon return to the United States a 14 day Restriction of Movement is required for each student and family member. Your team leader will provide symptom monitoring forms.

You must ensure you have adequate internet and can attend classes on Eastern Standard Time as scheduled.

If you plan to leave the U.S., please ensure that you and your family have valid, multi-entry U.S. visa(s) and that your visa(s) have not expired.  If you leave the U.S. with an expired visa or a single-entry visa, you will not be allowed to re-enter the U.S. 

“Leave approval memos" with DOD letterhead can be sent to you on request if your home country requires one.
